What is a Bernedoodle?

A Bernedoodle is an intentional cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. They have a wonderful variety of traits that they inherit from both of their parents. They are very sought after for their sweet, goofy, calmer personalties and their beautiful low shedding coats.They love to play outdoors just as much as they love to cuddle up on the couch.

What do the Generations Mean?

The “F” stands for “filial” and is simply a way to denote generation. So an F1 Bernedoodle means “First Generation” and so on. Each generation offers unique qualities for Doodle owners.

What Generation of Bernedoodles do we breed?

We currently breed F1B Bernedoodles which are a 25%75% cross of the two Breeds. We Breed F1B Poodle Dominant (75%Poodle 25% Bernese Mt Dog) as well as F1B Bernese dominant (75%Bernese and 25% poodle -AKA Ultra Bernedoodle). F1b More Poodle will be less shedding while the F1B Bernese Dominant will have more of the Bernese Mountain Dog personality and traits. We love both so much and love having the variety.

How Big Does a Bernedoodle Get?

They are loved for being gentle giants, they look and act like a gigantic teddy bears.

Coat & Colors

The Bernedoodle is known for its coat, and there is lot to learn. If you are considering owning a Bernedoodle you will need to know about the coat types and grooming.

An F1 Bernedoodles can have Straight, Wavy or Curly Hair
Most Bernedoodles have the wavy hair coat which is a low to non-shedding hair type. They inherit this from the Poodle Parent. Poodles or curly haired Doodles hair does not fall out on its own like fur, it must be brushed out or cut.
Most people with allergies are ok with this hair type. Bernedoodles with a more curly coat like the poodle will not shed. It is very rare to have a bernedoodle with straight hair.
The straighter the hair the less intensive grooming and maintenance it will need and the more it will shed.
The more curly the less it will shed and be more allergy friendly, but it will require more grooming and brushing.
All coat types can be wonderful options for different reasons. Let us know what matches your lifestyle and we can match you with your perfect Bernedoodle.
The coloring of every Bernedoodle is totally unique and we encourage you to not settle on a coat color until you come to pick your puppy, personality should always be your first determiner when picking a puppy.

Because of the parentage of Carolina our Bernese Mountain Dog and Odie our Parti Poodle our litters could potentially have almost any color of coat it’s up to nature to decide.
They shed very little to not at all which is wonderful for allergies or being indoors. But their coat is considered high maintenance so you will need to invest in grooming tools and find a good groomer.
We recommend
-Brushing every other day.
-Bathing once every 3 weeks or monthly (Curly haired dogs need their natural oils do not over bath them.
-Haircuts 2-6 times a year. Find a good groomer who has experience with Doodles and they will help you with caring for your Bernedoodle’s unique coat.

F1 Bernedoodles can be a good choice for those with very MILD allergies. Since they are a 50/50 cross, some shedding is to be expected. Most F1 Bernedoodles will be low shedding while others may shed moderately or not at all. If you are unsure how your allergies will be with a Bernedoodle we recommend spending some time with a Bernedoodle to see how you react.
If you want a more Super-low/Non Shedding Doodle we would recommend and F1B Doodle which is more Poodle. We Have F1B Sheepadoodles and Goldendoodles which are also amazing dogs.
No dog or animal is truly hypoallergenic. However a Poodle or a curly haired Doodle is about as close as you can get, but that is only in regards to the hair. If you have allergies to saliva and other characteristics it will likely be the same as other dog breeds. We cannot guarantee how your unique body will react to our Bernedoodles coats. We strive to honestly portray our dogs for the wonderful animals they actually are.

Personality Traits

Bernedoodles are highly affectionate and love being around their human families, especially kids. They love attention and crave regular cuddle sessions. Believe it or not, many of these cuties are trained to become therapy dogs! Bernedoodles can make excellent therapy dog, and for a good reason.

They are a typically calmer than many other doodles, They love to be a bit lazy and make great house dogs. They are quite athletic and love to play and run around. They are wonderful adventure buddies as well as snuggle buddies.

Every dog will have its pros and cons, here we have some for you to review before you decide if a Bernedoodle is right for you.

Do your research, ask advice, seek multiple sources for information and make an educated decision.

* Separation Anxiety
Bernedoodles are highly social and affectionate, they do not do well being left alone for long periods of time. You will need to train them to prevent them from forming separation anxiety. Thankfully there is training you can do to prevent and treat this issue.
* Grooming
Their stunning coat comes at a price you will need to have it regularly groomed and this can be costly. Make sure you are either prepared to learn to groom your dog yourself or pay for a quality groomer on a regular basis. You will also need to brush their coat often to prevent matting and hot spots.
* Difficult To Train
Typically they are relatively easy to train but they do have a stubborn streak. You will need to invest a decent amount of time especially during the puppy and teenage phases. All dogs require training and patience, have realistic expectations on yourself and your puppy.
* Needs Larger Space
Bernedoodle are big dogs, they need to space to run around. It is possible to happily own a Bernedoodle in an apartment, though we don’t recommend it. You will need to devote a lot of time to exercising your dog, and keeping their mind stimulated so they don’t get bored and into trouble.
* High Cost
They are big investment of money and time. They are a highly desirable designer breed and will require a big initial investment as well as continual cost of grooming, food, and supplies.
* Temperament:
They have a calm, sweet, goofy temperment and are very loving.
* Family Dog
They are wonderful with kids.
* Allergy Friendly Qualities
Low to non-shedding which can be a huge win for allergy sufferers or owners who do not like being covered in pet hair.
* Guard Dogs
The Bernese Mountain Dog is a great guard dog and in turn the Bernedoodle can be as well. They are protective of their people and with proper training will be able to identify find from foe.
* Intelligent
The Poodle is the second smartest breed of dog and the Bernese Mountain Dog is quite smart as well together you will have a highly intelligent Dog.
* Love For The Outdoors
The Poodle was originally bred as a water dog, and the Bernese was bred to be a shepherd and a pack dog. They are strong, love to play, and love the outdoors.
* Beautiful Colored Coats
You already know this they are gorgeous.
* Life Span
The Bernese Mountain Dog unfortunately has a short lifespan of only 7-8 years where a poodle can live to be 12-15+ years. Bernedoodles can have a Lifespan of 12-15+ years.
